New forms of media publishing

"Old media were new media once" - Naughton, 2006

As human are more dependent on technological advancement, so it seems our media as well. As we can see many new sources of media has popped up in the last 10 years, with most of them if not all of them revolving around the use of the internet. As what John Naughton in his article "Blogging and the Media Ecosystem" predicted, the new media ecosystem is much richer in content compared to media before, and it will forever get richer because of technological advancement. Thus media are now multimodal, not only containing words but pictures, links, and even video attachment for online articles

New ways to publish media:
Social networking sites such as facebook and twitter as we can see from the pictures 1 & 2 that news sources does not only need their own website but they are required to use social networking to enhance their presence as a source of media

Picture 1: Click like to gain access to their news
Picture 2: News agency using twitter to convey the latest news
Furthermore, not only they use social networking for enhance their presence, now they also use video to attract more viewers to their website as we can see from pictures 3 & 4, where the video are given the priority rather than the wording, as the relative size of the video to the word says it all.

Picture 4: BBC.co.uk, as we can see the video catches the attention of the reader first
Moreover, media provider establish themselves on sites such as youtube.com for example CBS, in the picture below, providing vlogs for their subscriber to watch.

And most importantly all this media is free, because for a lot of users free is good enough (Knowledge@Wharton, 2007)

Types of blogging communities and its structure

According to About.com, blogging community is a blogosphere, with the definition of, the online community of blogs and the people who write them. The main emphasis here is “online community of blogs”, thus this means is a gathering of bloggers come to a common place to share their blogs with each other. Such sites that allows this type of interaction are;
·         technorati.com
·         blogpulse.com
·         blogscope.com
·         xanga.com

This sites requires people to register themselves, before they can interact with the members within.
Furthermore, people can share their blogs via social networking websites such as facebook and twitter. Another method is to leave comments on the post.

According to White, 2006, there are three main types of blog based community.
Firstly the Single Blog Community, where visitors of a blog can leave comments to interact with the author and other visitors of that blog, as we can see in Figure 1 below.
Figure 1: Single Blog/ Blogger Centric Community
Secondly, Central Connecting Topic Community, where a community is build upon the same interest, passion and topic, as Figure 2 below shows,
Figure 2: Topic Centric Community
Third and lastly, Boundaried Communities, where is a platform that allow users to share blogs and interact with other authors, as Figure 3 explains,

Classification of blogs

According to Rowse(2005) there are 20 types of blogs posts, such as, instructional, informational, reviews and etc, and according to Belardo (2010) there are 5 types of blogs out there which are;
  1. Collaborative Blog
  2. How To / Tutorial Blog
  3. Travel and Cultural Blog
  4. Fashion and lifestyle Blog
  5. Personal Blog
However according to Simons (2008), there are 9 types of blogs
  1. Pamphleteering blogs
  2. Digest blogs
  3. Advocacy blogs
  4. Popular mechanics blogs
  5. Exhibition blogs
  6. Gate watchers blogs
  7. Diary
  8. Advertisement
  9. News blogs
As we can see from above, that Belardo’s classification on types of blogs are based upon themes whereas Simons’s is more precise, looking into the nature of the blog itself.

Nowadays, blogs are no longer belonging strictly words only basis, there are many ways to express one’s self thru different channels. For example video blogs from youtube.com, which houses stars such as Justin Beiber, who’s humble beginning is from this platform.

Furthermore sketch blogs as can be seen from devianart.com and photo blogs from websites such as photobucket.com and flickr.com.

In my humble opinion, I feel that I would classify a blog by Belardo’s way as it is simple to categorize and not as confusing as Simons’ 9 types of blog classification.

Blogs as current phenomenon & benefits to the community

According to technorati.com, in the year 2010 focused on female bloggers rather than male and they had 7200 responses, with hobbyists as the leading respondent, followed by part-timers, corporate, and self-employed. They collected the data via consumer survey, Lijit and Technorati Index Data

Furthermore, there are 152 million blogs on the internet as of 2010 as tracked by BlogPulse (pingdom, 2011).

The global financial crisis has caused about 16% or 1152 of respondents to change their topic, to focus on the economy downturn (technorati.com).

Moreover there are so many other topic to talk about such as, personal, business, schools, non-profit organization, politics, military, sports, review, tips and how-to
It is hard to say that a certain blogs are prevalent in a certain country, as there are about 6.8 billion (google.com, 2009) people in this world each with different taste and opinions

In my opinion, websites like malaysiakini.com, offers alternative news compared to the news sources in Malaysia, this means that their news might not agreed with those standard media such as The Star, New Straits Times, Harian Metro, Berita Harian and so on.

However, Malaysian are allowed to choose their source of media and what they want to listen to because in the constitution of Malaysia, Article 10. Malaysians are guaranteed the freedom of speech, but governed by Article 10 (2) and (4), in the interest of national security, public order and morality (ERA Administrator, 2010)
